Assembly, Use, and Maintenance
Assemble The Pump
1. Remove contents from the box. The four main components are the pump, red cover, hose with connectors and a bag containing the handle, locking collar, and a valve stem with nut.
2. To attach the return valve (valve stem) to the red cover, remove the knockout from the edge of the cover and insert the valve stem through the knockout from the underside of the cover and tighten the nut.
3. Drop the locking collar onto the pump shaft (it may be necessary to loosen the thumbscrew) and screw the handle onto the pump shaft. Screw the hose assembly into the side of the handle.
4. Remove the lid from the sealant pail and replace it with the red cover. Tighten the three thumbscrews to anchor the cover to the pail. Insert the pump through the clamping collar from topside of the cover and push the pump to the bottom of the pail. Tighten the machine screw and nut in the clamping collar. The pump is now ready to use.
Tips for Using the Pump
1. As delivered. Each stroke delivers between 8 and 9 ½ fluid ounces of sealant. The pump can and should be calibrated to deliver exactly 8 ounces. To do so, please follow the instructions outlined on the "Calibration Procedure" sheet.
2. Make sure the tire pressure has been lowered to 30-35 psi (this will make installation easier). However, it is not necessary to decrease pressure below 30 psi. In fact, it is helpful to maintain at least 10 psi in the tire.
3. Smooth, steady pump strokes work best. Avoid both slow and quick jerky strokes.
4. Never try to force the pump handle down. (If it will not move, make sure the quarter turn valve is open and that the valve core has been removed.) If it still will not pump, stop pumping and follow the cleaning procedures listed in "Maintenance" section below.
5. After treating each tire, be sure to close the hose valve before disconnecting the pump.
Maintenance
1. When properly maintained and cleaned, this pump will give years of good service. Flush clean water through the pump. Coat it (inside and out) with WD-40 or a similar material to assure ease of operation and extend the life of the pump. Be sure to also coat the outside of the shaft.
2. If pump becomes fouled or clogged, immerse the bottom of the pump in a pail or other container of clean water and agitate with a stirring motion. This will usually dislodge the accumulation and the pump can be returned to service.
3. If the fouling material is too tightly packed it will be necessary to disassemble the foot valve and piston. This can be accomplished as follows:
a) Unscrew the foot valve from the pump barrel. (CAUTION: The check ball and retainer pin are loose and can fall out easily and be lost.) Wash any accumulated material from the inside valve.
b) Unscrew the "T" handle from the pump rod. Unscrew the metal cap from the pump barrel and pull the piston and rod assembly through the top of the barrel.
c) Unscrew the rod from the piston. (CAUTION: The check ball is loose in the piston and can fall out easily. Do not lose the check ball.)
d) Look at the bottom end of the rod. Remove any fouling material from the lower end of the rod and from the inside of the piston.
e) Re-assemble the pump in the reverse order of disassembly. Assemble only to finger tightness. Do not over tighten.
Calibration Procedure
5 Gallon Pail Pump
As received, the SuperSealant pump for the 5 gallon pail will dispense approximately 8 to 9 fluid ounces per full stroke (all the way up and all the way down). It can be adjusted to dispense exactly 8 fluid ounces as follows:
1. Loosen the locking collar located just below the handle by loosening the thumbscrew in the collar.
2. Pull the pump handle (shaft) out as far as it will go.
3. Slide the collar down the shaft until the bottom of the collar is exactly 14 ¾" from the top of the large carp on top of the pump barrel. This will put the collar between 1" and 3" from the base of the handle.
4. Lock the collar in place by re-tightening the thumbscrew.
